Climate change is no longer a distant threat, but it is a lived reality for many communities across Nigeria. From recurring floods to waste pollution and land degradation, the impacts are increasingly visible, especially among young people and underserved populations. In response to these growing challenges, Eco Clean Active Initiative (ECA) launched the Climate Action Activation in Schools and Communities programme - an outreach and capacity-building effort designed to inspire awareness, responsibility, and grassroots climate action.
Implemented between January 13 and June 24, 2022, the programme reached communities in Niger, Nasarawa, and Anambra States. It focused on engaging students, teachers, and community members, equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand climate change and take meaningful action within their environments.
The approach was simple but effective: meet people where they are - schools and communities, and turn these spaces into hubs for climate education and action. Through interactive sessions, participants learned about the causes and impacts of climate change, as well as locally relevant solutions. School climate clubs were established to sustain peer learning and encourage continuous engagement beyond the programme.
Community dialogues created opportunities to connect climate issues to everyday realities, making the conversations more relatable and actionable. Participants also took part in hands-on activities such as environmental sanitation exercises, tree planting, waste reduction campaigns, and recycling awareness initiatives. These practical actions reinforced learning and encouraged behavior change.
A key strength of the programme was its participatory approach. By actively involving participants in discussions, group activities, and decision-making, the initiative fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility. This not only deepened understanding but also motivated individuals to become advocates for environmental sustainability within their communities.
In total, the programme reached over 700 students and community members across the three states. It led to increased awareness of climate change and environmental protection, improved adoption of sustainable practices like proper waste management and tree care, and strengthened youth-led initiatives at the grassroots level.
The Climate Action Activation in Schools and Communities programme stands as a testament to the power of local action. By empowering young people and communities with the right knowledge and tools, Eco Clean Active Initiative is helping to build a generation that is informed, engaged, and ready to drive climate solutions from the ground up.
As climate challenges continue to evolve, initiatives like this remain critical - not just for awareness, but for creating lasting, community-driven impact.
