Eco Clean Hub: Objectives, Experience and Briquette Production

Eco Clean Hub is a community-based environmental innovation and learning centre established by Eco Clean Active Initiative to strengthen grassroots climate action, environmental education, waste management, clean energy innovation and community resilience.

The Hub builds on our work since established in 2019. The Eco Clean Hub has been operational since 2024 and was formally launched in September 2025.

Objectives of the Eco Clean Hub

The Hub is designed to:

1. Provide a practical learning and innovation space for environmental sustainability, climate action and circular-economy solutions.

2. Train young people, women and community members in waste management, recycling, clean cooking and other environmentally sustainable practices.

3. Promote agricultural-waste-to-energy solutions, particularly the conversion of agricultural residues into clean cooking briquettes.

4. Reduce open burning and inappropriate disposal of agricultural and household waste by turning waste materials into useful products.

5. Support community livelihoods by developing skills and small-scale green enterprises around recycling, briquette production, tree nurseries and other sustainable activities.

6. Demonstrate locally appropriate climate solutions that can be replicated in vulnerable communities.

7. Serve as a community meeting and demonstration centre for environmental education, climate resilience, ecosystem restoration and youth-led action.

Experience with Briquette Production

Our organization already has practical experience in producing and promoting briquettes from agricultural and other locally available waste materials through the Eco Clean for MAPA (Most Affected People and Areas) Project.

The Eco Clean for MAPA Project was implemented between September 2023 and March 2024 across three states and the FCT in Nigeria. It reached 1,870 people in 23 communities and included awareness on waste management, climate change, tree planting, school engagement and training in the production of clean renewable cooking energy techniques.

A particularly important component of the project was the practical introduction of communities to briquette production as an alternative cooking fuel. Agricultural residues and other suitable biomass waste were treated as resources rather than waste, demonstrating how materials that might otherwise be openly burned or discarded can be converted into a useful energy product.

Through this experience, community members were exposed to the basic process of:

Agricultural waste → preparation/drying → carbonisation or processing → crushing → mixing with a suitable binder → moulding/pressing → drying → briquette fuel.

Institutional Experience

Our experience from Eco Clean for MAPA provides a foundation for the Eco Clean Hub to move beyond awareness and demonstration toward continued community-based production, training and enterprise development. The Hub can therefore serve as a platform where farmers, women, youth, students and other community members learn how to convert locally available agricultural residues into briquettes for household and institutional cooking.

This approach supports a circular economy model: agricultural waste is diverted from open burning or disposal, converted into a useful energy resource, and potentially transformed into an income-generating product for participating communities.
