Environmental Sensitization and Clean-Up Initiative: Driving Community Action Across Nigeria

In commemoration of World Clean-up Day 2023, Eco Clean Active Initiative successfully implemented a multi-state environmental sensitization and clean-up campaign, reinforcing the urgent need for collective action in addressing Nigeria’s growing waste management challenges.

The campaign, carried out in September 2023, spanned four states - Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, and Lagos - bringing together communities to tackle improper waste disposal while promoting sustainable environmental practices. Designed as a holistic intervention, the initiative combined community sensitization, clean-up exercises, and capacity-building sessions focused on waste management and recycling as pathways to both environmental protection and economic empowerment.

At the heart of the campaign was a strong community-driven approach. Prior to implementation, surveys were conducted to identify the most affected areas, followed by active engagement with local leaders to ensure inclusivity and relevance. Over 80 volunteers - including young environmentalists, community members, and grassroots leaders - were mobilized to participate in the activities, demonstrating the power of collective action.

Eco Clean Active Initiative led the planning and execution of the campaign, coordinating logistics, facilitating stakeholder engagement, and delivering impactful awareness sessions. Participants were trained on proper waste sorting, recycling techniques, and how to generate income through sustainable waste practices - turning environmental challenges into economic opportunities.

The impact of the campaign was significant. Communities recorded increased awareness of environmental issues, improved attitudes toward waste management, and stronger commitment to sustainable practices.
